About Rod Mathews
At a young age, Rod was trained as a classical pianist with Josie Roberts, a retired Bethune Cookman University music professor. He learned to play bass guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, French horn and percussion.
His professional performing career began early. In his teens, Rod started as a backup musician for various night club acts in Miami, Florida.
His first professional concert appearance was with Earth, Wind, & Fire in Miami in the 1970’s. Since then Rod has appeared with War, Mtume, the late Phyllis Hyman, Stevie B, Shirley Brown, and John Edwards of the Spinners.
Recording Arts
Rod’s first professional recording was done at T. K. Productions in Miami, (home of Timmy Thomas, K.C. & the Sunshine Band and Betty Wright) in the 1970’s.
Rod has recorded professionally at Sunshine Sound, (owned by the Sunshine Band), Criteria Recording Studio, Crystal Sound and Entertainment and at the Taft Building in Hollywood, CA. He has also recorded with Gong Sound Studios, Ikus Records as well as two studios that he owned.
Rod has written music for Howard Johnson of Niteflight, Stevie B, Jimmy Bo Horn, GreyBoy of Ubiquity Records, De La Soul, RZA of Wu Tang Clan and for songs that he recorded. Currently he has three songs playing in 30 countries around the world for which he is receiving royalties, and have been for the past 20 years.
